Argon plasma coagulation (APC)
Argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a minimally invasive medical procedure that uses ionized argon gas and an electrical current to create blood clots or scars, primarily in the gastrointestinal tract, to stop bleeding or remove tissue. It is often performed during endoscopic procedures like colonoscopy or upper endoscopy.
How it works:
- Ionized Argon Gas: The procedure uses argon gas, which is ionized (charged) to form a plasma.
- Electrical Current: A high-frequency electrical current is passed through the plasma, causing the current to flow to the tissue with the lowest electrical resistance.
- Thermal Effect: The electrical current generates heat, which coagulates (or clots) the tissue, effectively stopping bleeding or removing unwanted tissue.
Applications:
- Hemostasis: APC is frequently used to stop bleeding from various lesions in the gastrointestinal tract, such as angiodysplasias, ulcers, and bleeding from tumors.
- Tissue Destruction: It can also be used to destroy or remove tissue, such as in the case of tumors or polyps.
- Debulking: APC can be used to reduce the size of tumors, making them easier to treat or remove.
- Recanalization: In some cases, it can be used to clear blocked airways or to open up narrow passages.
Advantages:
- Minimally Invasive: APC is a non-surgical procedure performed through an endoscope, avoiding the need for incisions.
- Precise: The plasma stream allows for targeted treatment of the affected area, minimizing damage to surrounding tissue.
- Fast: The procedure is relatively quick, and most patients recover rapidly.
- Safe: APC has a lower risk of complications compared to some other methods, particularly due to its non-contact nature.
Conditions treated:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding: From various sources like angiodysplasias, ulcers, and tumors.
- Barrett's Esophagus: APC can be used to treat precancerous changes in the lining of the esophagus.
- Esophageal Cancer: It can be used to shrink tumors and potentially help with resection.
- Rectal Bleeding: APC can help stop bleeding from various causes, including hemorrhoids and other lesions.
- Colonic Polyps: APC can be used to remove or reduce the size of polyps.
- Watermelon Stomach (Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia - GAVE): APC is used to treat this condition.
