ascitic tap
An ascitic tap, also known as paracentesis, is a procedure that removes excess fluid from the abdomen. It can be used to diagnose and treat liver disease.
How it's done
- The patient lies on their back with their abdomen cleaned with antiseptic.
- The doctor uses ultrasound to locate the fluid.
- The doctor numbs the skin with local anesthetic.
- A needle is used to insert a thin plastic drain tube into the fluid.
- The fluid drains into a sealed bag.
- The tube is removed after enough fluid has been drained.
What it's used for
- Diagnosing liver disease, abdominal tuberculosis, and cancer
- Tracking the progression of liver disease and congestive heart failure
- Monitoring the effectiveness of treatment for liver disease and cancer
What to expect
- You should feel normal after the procedure, though you may feel more comfortable if a lot of fluid was removed.
- Complications are uncommon, but include infection, leakage, and hypotension.
When to seek medical advice
- If you have cirrhosis and are gaining weight quickly, you should talk to your healthcare provider.
