CONSTIPATION
Constipation is a condition that makes it difficult to pass stools or have bowel movements. It can be uncomfortable and worrisome.
Symptoms
- Fewer than three bowel movements a week
- Hard, dry, or lumpy stools
- Straining to have a bowel movement
- Feeling like you haven't fully emptied your bowels
- Abdominal pain or bloating
Causes
- Not eating enough fiber
- Certain medications, such as pain relievers, antidepressants, and iron pills
- Metabolic or endocrine disorders, such as hypothyroidism and diabetes
- Other conditions, such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and cystic fibrosis
Treatment
- Eating more high-fiber foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes
- Drinking more water
- Avoiding alcohol and caffeine
- Being more active
- Taking fiber supplements
- Taking probiotics, such as those found in yogurt and kefir
When to seek medical advice
- Constipation doesn't go away with self-care
- You have blood in your stool or bleeding from your rectum
- You have continual abdominal pain
Most constipation is not serious and can be treated.
