Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
Diverticulosis and diverticulitis are both conditions that affect the large intestine (colon). Diverticulosis is when small pouches form in the colon, while diverticulitis is when those pouches become inflamed or infected.
Diverticulosis
- When diverticula are present in the colon, but they aren't causing symptoms
- Most people develop diverticula as they age, but most don't experience symptoms
- Treatment isn't needed if there aren't symptoms
- Eating more high-fiber and probiotic-rich foods may help with mild symptoms
Diverticulitis
- When the pouches in the colon become inflamed or infected
- Often requires medical attention, including hospitalization
- Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, fever, nausea, and vomiting
- Seek emergency medical attention if there's blood in the stool, severe nausea or vomiting, or sudden and severe abdominal pain
