dumping syndrome
The dumping syndrome diet involves eating smaller meals, eating more protein and fiber, and limiting foods high in sugar.
What to eat
- Eat 6–8 small meals or snacks throughout the day
- Eat more protein, like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, milk, yogurt, and cheese
- Eat more fiber, like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables
- Eat complex carbohydrates, like oatmeal and other whole-grain foods
- Eat small bites of food and chew well
- Include small amounts of extra fats, like avocado and nut butters
What to avoid
- Limit high-sugar foods, like candy, table sugar, syrup, sodas, and juices
- Limit fluids during mealtimes
- Avoid drinking large amounts of liquids with meals
Other tips
- Rest or lie down for 30 minutes after a meal
- Use artificial sweeteners like Splenda, but limit others like sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and maltitol
- Choose foods with a lower Glycemic Index (GI), which means they take longer to digest
Dumping syndrome is most common after surgery to bypass the stomach or remove part of the stomach. Symptoms usually occur within minutes after eating, especially after a meal high in sugar.
