Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GER & GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder that occurs when stomach contents leak into the esophagus. It can cause heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and other symptoms.
Symptoms
- Heartburn, a burning feeling in the chest
- Regurgitating sour or bitter liquid
- Non-burning chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Sore throat
- Coughing
- Increased salivation
- Shortness of breath
Causes
- Stomach contents flowing back up into the esophagus
- Irritation and muscle issues in the esophagus
Treatment
- Eating small meals
- Avoiding large meals
- Staying upright after eating
- Avoiding coffee, tea, and cola
- Elevating the head of the bed at night
- Avoiding strenuous activities after eating
- Losing weight if overweight
- Minimizing wearing tight clothing around the abdomen
Prevention
- Quitting or avoiding smoking
- Sleeping at a slight angle with the head slightly elevated

- GERD can damage the esophagus, pharynx, or respiratory tract
- GERD can cause vomiting in infants and children
- GERD can cause coughing and other breathing problems in infants and children
