Hepatitis b
Hepatitis B blood tests detect the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the blood. There are several types of hepatitis B blood tests, including:
- Anti-HBs: Detects antibodies that indicate immunity to HBV
- Anti-HBc: Detects antibodies to the HBV core antigen, which indicates a past or recent infection
- Anti-HBc IgM: Detects IgM antibodies that indicate a recent infection
- Anti-HBe: Detects antibodies that indicate the immune system is responding to HBV
Other tests that may be used to diagnose hepatitis B include: Liver ultrasound, Liver biopsy, and Liver function tests.
When to get tested
You should consult your doctor to get tested for hepatitis B if you:
- Have family members with a history of liver disease
- Have ever injected drugs
- Have had a medical procedure overseas where the equipment wasn't sterile
- Have participated in traditional practices or rituals where blood is involved
The CDC recommends that all adults 18 and older get screened for HBV at least once in their lifetime.
