KFT (kidney function test)
A kidney function test (KFT) is a blood test that measures how well your kidneys are functioning. It's also known as a renal function test (RFT).
What it measures
- Kidney function, including waste removal, electrolyte balance, and fluid levels
What it tests for
- Kidney disease, inflammation, infection, or damage
Who it's recommended for
- People with diabetes or high blood pressure, or those with a family history of kidney problems
What it may involve
- A blood test, a 24-hour urine sample, or both
What it helps with
- Diagnosing kidney disease, monitoring its progression, and evaluating treatment efficacy
KFT test parameters
The KFT test measures parameters like:
- Creatinine
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
- Uric acid
- Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and chloride)
- Calcium
- Blood urea
- BUN/creatinine ratio
KFT test results
- A KFT test can help diagnose kidney disease or kidney failure. Abnormal results can also indicate kidney stones.
Other kidney tests
- Other tests that can assess kidney function include imaging tests and biopsies.
