UGI ENDOSCOPY
An upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, also known as an EGD, is a procedure that allows a doctor to examine the upper part of your digestive system. It involves inserting a flexible tube with a camera through your mouth and down your throat.
What it's used for Diagnosing cancer and other conditions, Removing polyps or other types of growths, Stopping bleeding caused by ulcers or other conditions, and Widening a narrow esophagus.
How it's performed
- A doctor inserts a flexible, lighted tube called an endoscope through your mouth and down your throat
- The endoscope is slowly pushed through your esophagus and stomach, and into your duodenum
- Video images from the tube are seen on a monitor
Preparation
- You will need to empty your bowel, and therefore, cannot eat or drink, at least 10 hours before the procedure
- You should inform your doctor on the medicines you take
